Ensuring the Safety of the Elderly at Home

Many accidents do take place in the home every day. Most of these accidents happen in bathrooms, staircases, and kitchens as these are places where accidents are more likely to take place. These are not the only places where accidents in the home can happen, and the placement of the furniture and the use of equipment can also cause accidents. Many elderly people suffer from poor vision and reduced mobility and this can make them more vulnerable to accidents in the home. What action can you take, to ensure that your home is one in which the elderly can live safely?

Lighting

You make your home that much safer for the seniors in it when you have adequate lighting. When every area in a home is properly lit up, then it is easy for the seniors to move about without much of problem and effort. The light should be just adequate and neither too bright or too dim so that it is not of any help.

Areas in a home that always need to be well lit are corners, passageways, and staircases. Light switches in all areas must always be strategically placed so that they are logical and easily accessible to the members of the home who are aged. Have light switches that glow and this will allow them to be very easily seen. Plan for power outages and see that you have sufficient emergency lighting strategically located in a home so that they are easily accessible to everyone in it, especially the elderly.

Fittings and Furniture

All fittings and furniture in a home must be safe for the elderly to use. When you install these in a home, follow certain guidelines, so that safety is ensured.
* Make sure that windows and doors have secure locks and are easy to open
* Temperature settings on air conditioning, ventilation, and heating equipment must be appropriate so that the home is comfortable at all times
* Never have low furniture in a home, as it can lead to it being tripped over
* Never allow curtains to billow and ensure they are tightly fixed
* Have cabinets and storage cabinets that are low so that stools or ladders never have to be used
* All fabrics used for furnishing must be those that are not flammable
* Avoid accidents, by fixing grills or railings on all balconies, high windows, and terraces
* Garage doors must be those that can be easily opened
* Cables and wires must be hidden so that they can never cause any tripping

Provide for Emergencies

When the elderly are living by themselves, they must be provided with a complete list of emergency numbers for essential services. Put them all on speed dial, so that no time is lost by the elderly in having to dial these numbers.

If you are responsible for providing the necessary care for elderly persons, make sure that you check on them and call them up every day. Assess the situation for yourself, by going there every now and then. You can also make a listing of service numbers and other information about the elderly person or persons. This list can be put up on the fridge and even distributed among neighbors so that they can tackle any emergency that occurs.

The elderly must have homes that are safe for them to live in. If a home is not properly set up, it can lead to a number of accidents to seniors. So take some time out, and concern yourself about the safety of a home that has the elderly living in it.
